WHAT CAUSES ACNE AND HOW CAN I TREAT IT?

It is thought that there are two main causes of acne; hormones and stress.
With the onset of puberty there is an increase in the production of testosterone; sebaceous glands in the skin are sometimes very sensitive to testosterone, which can be present in both men and women. This production of testosterone can then stimulate the glands to produce more oil; at the same time dead skins cells lining the pores are not shed properly and clog up the follicles. The combination of these two effects causes a build-up of oil resulting in comedones and papules.
The bacteria known as propionibacterium (P bacteria) is also linked with acne; these bacteria live on the skin usually without causing problems, but, in those skins prone to acne, the build-up of oil creates an ideal environment in which these bacteria can multiply. When pores become blocked this bacteria overfills and starts to breakdown the walls of the pore allowing the bacteria to spill into the surrounding area, leading to an acne lesion.
Those suffering with acne often visit their doctor and are subsequently prescribed antibiotics to calm the skin. However prescriptive medication for acne can often have unwanted side effects and tends to mask the symptoms as opposed to tackling the underlying cause of the problem. When the patient finishes the course of antibiotics, the acne can often return.
