ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY – WHERE DO I START?

The plastic and packaging crisis which threatens our world is very real and affects us all. According to Zero Waste, more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry, the majority of which is not recyclable. Recently, more and more beauty companies of all sizes have been consciously cleaning up their act by producing products containing sustainable ingredients and fully recyclable packaging. However, we all need to do our bit no matter how small, to reduce waste and start buying with an eco-conscious mindset.

Following these simple beauty tips will help start your new eco-friendly beauty regime:

Important Terminology

Knowing the real meaning behind keywords will help when it comes to choosing and buying your products. For example, sustainable products provide environmental, social and economic benefits. They do not damage public health and the environment over their whole life cycle and only use ingredients which can be grown or replaced. Eco-friendly products do not harm the environment in their production and while using them. They can also be safely washed down the drain. Recyclable mainly refers to the packaging.

Sustainably Sourced Ingredients

Going back to sustainability, the ingredients used in beauty products need to be scrutinised. Do your research and find out what really is in your favourite face cream. Look at ingredients to avoid lists, most eco-conscious brands should have these available to view. Pevonia’s is here:

Be Water-Responsible

Water is essential in the beauty industry, however, the amount used by the cosmetic industry is incredibly high. Brands are now becoming water responsible and formulating products which use less water and richer alternative ingredients. The trend for waterless beauty is a positive one and Pevonia is one of those water-responsible brands. Launching a new no-rinse body wrap, Pevonia addresses concerns over water wastage across the world. Requiring no rinsing after application, this body wrap features powerful ingredients such as Crepe-No-More De-Ageing featuring longan fruit seed extract, lychee and marine collagen. Bar Soaps

The good old bar soap makes a welcome comeback! With minimal packaging, they also last much longer than liquid soaps, making them an eco and cost-friendly option. There are so many on the market now, covering all skin concerns for the face and body and haircare too.

Refillable Products

Refillable beauty products are becoming more widely available, with many companies now offering refill schemes. Some sheet masks on the market can be used up to 5 times, making them highly desirable, especially those which are biodegradable.

Do you Floss/use Cotton Buds?

Dental floss is one of those hidden nasties. There are many different types out there, but only buy the biodegradable versions. The majority of them are created from nylon which is then coated in wax and cannot be recycled; opt for ones which are made from bamboo or silk.

Cotton buds are found in most bathrooms throughout the UK and, unfortunately, are flushed down toilets rather than being placed in the bin and end up in landfill as the plastic is not recycled. Replace them with cotton and bamboo versions, which are fully biodegradable, and the packaging is recyclable.

Aluminium Packaging

It’s no secret that we are wooed by the beautiful packaging containing our cosmetic products, but it’s the product inside that counts. The majority of packaging found on the shop shelves is not recyclable and we need to start looking, and ultimately changing the products we buy if they refuse to be eco-friendly. Aluminium is fast becoming the best alternative for our cosmetic’s packaging, not only as it looks great, it is the only material that can be recycled over and over again.

The devastating impact plastic is having on our precious planet is sadly very apparent. Making these small changes will make a difference, especially if we all join in and put a stop to irresponsible beauty. Think before you buy, spend slightly more and have a clear conscience and finally, ask questions if you are not sure.

The only beautiful beauty is eco-friendly.
