Why Use a Serum or Concentrate?

Why Use a Serum or Concentrate?

What is a skin serum?

A serum, or concentrate, is a lightweight skin care product with a high concentration of active ingredients. It is designed to be applied to clean skin, before your moisturiser, so that it can be absorbed straight into the skin’s surface. Molecules in serums are small, to ensure they can penetrate the skin’s surface effectively.

A serum can address and target specific skin concerns. For example; lines and wrinkles. They tend to contain a high dose of anti-ageing ingredients. They are expensive when compared with a moisturiser, but they are concentrated so you only need a little each day. Drop for drop they prove good value.

Although a serum is likely to contain moisturising and hydrating ingredients, it isn’t a moisturiser. Adding a moisturiser over the top of this product will keep the expensive ingredients in and keep skin hydrated throughout the day or night. They are designed to work together.

How do I choose the right serum for my skin?

You need to look at the ingredients within the serum to see if they address your own skin concerns. Our Ingredient and Question of The Month blogs can tell you more about the major ingredients found in skin care products. There are details, below, on the concentrates from Pevonia.

Certain ingredients are great for dry skin, others for acne-prone skin, those suffering from redness, helping to lighten sun spots, etc.

What order do I use products in?

Cleanser * Toner * Serum * Moisturiser.

For daytime use, either use an SPF product between the serum and moisturiser, or choose a moisturiser with SPF. Alternatively, use an SPF product within your make-up routine.

Pevonia’s Concentrates

Within the product range, you will see that Pevonia uses the description ‘serum’, ‘concentrate’ and ‘intensifier’ within home care. These have 10% active ingredients. As a comparison, serums bought on the High Street have up to 0.2%. Pevonia’s professional line refers to ampoules, which are used within facials, these have an even higher concentration of active ingredients, at 12%.

A high level of active ingredients can cause a reaction in skin not used to them. Your therapist is the best person to assist you in making an informed choice on the products to use.
