Why are marine based ingredients so good?

Ingredients From The Sea

For centuries, we have enjoyed trips to the seaside. There is something wonderful about the salty sea air and taking a bracing dip in the surf.

Nowadays we find the goodness from the sea in our skincare products and there is a very good reason for it!

Sea Salt and Sea Water

Sea salt is an exfolliant with a healing and detoxifying effect on the skin. It absorbs dirt, impurities and toxins to deeply cleanse. Sea salt is extracted from seawater to provide an ingredient high in minerals, such as; magnesium, calcium and potassium. The mineral content helps to restore skin’s protective barrier and helps it remain hydrated. Circulation and lymphatic drainage are boosted and inflammation reduced.

Magnesium is essential for skin health. When applied topically, it helps to get rid of dry skin, combats fluid retention and slows the ageing process. It also helps improve the texture of skin and its hydration.

Most of the body’s calcium is found in the epidermis – the outer layer of the skin. Calcium, like magnesium, also helps prevent water retention. In addition, it improves circulation leading to improvements in dry and problematic skin. Calcium helps the body regulate cell turnover and maintains the protective lipid barrier of skin, keeping infection at bay. Along with other minerals, it helps condition and hydrate the skin.

Potassium helps to balance moisture within the skin. A lack of potassium in your diet can lead to dry skin and skin disorders. Within skincare products, this mineral balances the ph level in skin, absorbs water molecules from the envirnoment and hydrates the skin.

Marine Algae and Seaweed

Algae are photosynthetic ‘plant-like’ creatures that are neither plant nor animal. They are wonderfully hydrating, as they are packed with humectants that draw in more water than other natural ingredients. They also contain vitamin E which is hydrating too.

Seaweed is marine macroalgae with a multitude of varieties. In addition to their use in cosmetics, many seaweeds are good to eat, others are available within organic fertilisers.

Antioxidants, amino acids and additional vitamins are all found within algae. The benefits of antioxidant vitamins B and C include; combating pigmentation, brightening the skin and stimulating collagen.

Amino acids maintain and fill cells membrances, create a plump, youthful face and prevent accelerated ageing. Minerals include omega, zinc and magnesium for healthy skin, soothing inflammation and protecting against environmental aggressors.

Sea Whip

Sea whip is a species of soft coral, growing up to 2 metres in length. The extract is an excellent skin care ingredient. Similar to algae, this is a hydrator used to moisturise skin. This extract goes much further though, as it is also a healing agent with the ability to neautralise the enzyme responsible for skin irritation. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce swelling and pain, from acne and sunburn.

Marine Collagen

Collagen is available from many sources. Please see my blog on collagen for full details (link). Marine collagen comes from fish and is generally a by-product of the fishing industry, where it is extracted from fish scales, oil and ligaments. Marine collagen is antioxidant and contains amino acids (the building blocks of life).

Marine collagen is made up of Type I and Type III collagen: Skin collagen is 85% Type I. It provides strength and elasticity to the skin, making it plump and keeping wrinkles at bay.

Marine Elastin

Similar to marine collagen in many ways, marine elastin is another protein derived from fish. It helps to protect the surface of the skin whilst retaining and preserving moisture.
