Stem cells exist in both plants and the human body. They are unspecialised cells, which can go on to become a number of different cell types.

Within plants, stem cells are found in regions called meristems. The main meristems are found close to the tip of the plant’s shoot and the tip of its root. Plant stem cells can go on to form different tissues and organs within the plant.

In a similar way to stem cells in humans, plant stem cells can renew and regenerate. In this way, they can regenerate live plants after an injury. They can not only repair tissue damage, but also develop a new plant.

Plant Stem Cells in Skincare

Plant stem cells have stronger antioxidant properties than human cells, which makes them useful in skincare. Antioxidants help to fight the effects of free radicals which can damage and prematurely age the skin. Plant stem cells are able to repair tissues and prolong the lifecycle of their cells, giving an anti-ageing effect. They also have anti-inflammatory properties.

For the best results, stem cell extracts are used alongside other active ingredients within skincare.
