Ingredient of the Month - Green Tea
What is it?
Green Tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis evergreen shrub. It’s leaves are used to produce tea and is mainly grown and harvested in China and India. To create Green tea, the leaves have to undergo a different withering and oxidation process compared to the leaves that turn into black tea. Green tea has many uses, apart from being brewed in a cup, it is very popular in skincare products, aromatherapy and weight loss.
How can Green Tea help my skin?
Green tea is a wonderful anti-ageing ingredient. This is because it is full of antioxidants, which apart from maintaining skin health; they fight the ageing free radicals which cause sagging skin, sun damage, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Polyphenols are some of the antioxidants found in green tea and these slow down the whole process by neutralising the free radicals.
Many of us suffer with puffy eyes and dark circles. Green Tea is highly-efficient at reducing the puffiness found around the eye area as it contains a substance called tannins, which is a natural astringent. Shrinking the blood vessels, puffiness, dark circles and any other swelling, green Tea will reduce and bring calm to the delicate area. Vitamin K is also found within green tea and will also help lighten the dark, discoloured areas under and around the eye area.
Improve Complexion and Tone
Another property of the tannins found in green tea, is that they are astringents. Reducing pore size and evening out rough skin textures, it can also flush out toxins from deep within the skin, clearing congestion, blemishes and lightening scars.
Fights Acne and Pimples
Antibacterial agents known as Catechins are another substance found within green tea and can help target and remove the acne-causing bacteria. Another property of Catechins is that they help regulate the hormonal activity in the body. If there are any imbalances, they work to stabilise them as hormonal imbalances are one of the key causes of acne. When suffering from acne or regular breakouts, skin will most likely be red and inflamed. Green tea is a natural anti-inflammatory and will calm the affected area before getting to work on removing bacteria.
Use after Shaving
Using an after shaving skincare product which contains green tea will calm any itchiness caused by the abrasive nature of a razor, but it will also reduce the redness caused by razor burns.
Some skin conditions cause extreme redness such as rosacea. Green tea can help control and maintain the amount of flushing experience by the individual and reduce the inflammation which is another symptom. Many rosacea skincare products now contain green tea as an effective, natural ingredient.
