Ingredient of the Month - Glycolic Acid

Ingredient of the Month - Glycolic Acid

About Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is a natural ingredient derived from sugar cane. It falls into a set of molecules known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). There are 5 different types of AHAs; Lactic Acid from milk, Citric Acid from oranges and lemons, Malic Acid from apples and pears, Tartaric Acids from grapes, and of course Glycolic Acid, which is the most commonly used AHA, and it has a reputation of being one of the safest as well.

You’ll find Glycolic Acid in many chemical peels due to high percentages being very effective for skin treatments, and it is even safe enough to use on sensitive skins. A lower percentage of Glycolic Acid can be used in our daily skincare products. The skin needs to get used to AHAs, so it is best to start use low concentrations to start out, then with time you can increase the concentration without much risk of irritation or reaction.

It's important to note that you should always wear sunscreen, even more so when you're using AHA's like Glycolic Acid, as your skin is more susceptible to sunburn when you use facial acids.

How can Glycolic Acid Help my skin?

Exfoliating

Glycolic acid increases cell turnover, so it sloughs away the dead skin built up on the very surface, and helps the new cells at a lower level surface to the top. Glycolic Acid ultimately the holy grail of exfoliators, it safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells on your skin, bringing fresh, new skin to the surface of your skin. Glycolic acid is a great exfoliator for anyone looking to reveal younger looking skin, but it is much more than anti-aging product.

Anti-Ageing

Glycolic Acid is ideal for anyone wanting to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Studies show that Glycolic Acid assists with boosting collagen production, which is brilliant for plumping up the skin. Collagen is a vital structural protein, helping the skin tissue remain firm and resist wrinkling. At low strengths, Glycolic Acid is the key ingredient to look out for when it comes to shopping for effective anti-ageing skincare product.

Acne

Glycolic Acid can even help those with acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin. The ingredient can penetrate deep into the skin, making it ideal for addressing cystic and regular acne breakouts alike - plus it almost seems to dissolve blackheads on contact. Additionally, the ingredient helps give pores a more miniscule appearance. When dirt, oil, and sebum are clogging your pores, they tend to take on a much larger appearance, Glycolic Acid and will clear the blockage and cause the pores to tighten.

Lightens Discolouration of skin

Products that contain Glycolic Acid are used often to treat skin discolorations such as acne scarring, skin sun spots or age spots. This is thanks to the exfoliation properties; skin cells are renewed which help effectively fade scars and spots caused by the sun or acne by evening out the scar and fading the discoloration.

How Does It Work?

In our opinion, Glycolic Acid can do no wrong when it comes to providing exceptional results for most skin types, and skin concerns. If you're nervous of using skin acids DIY style, don't be - while you might feel a gentle 'tingle' this is the acid getting to work on those dead skin cells.

Once applied, Glycolic Acid reacts with the upper layer of the epidermis, weakening the binding properties of the lipids that hold the dead skin cells together, this is when a slight tingling may be felt. Glycolic Acid is made up of small molecules which can penetrate the skin deeply and easily, thus why this remarkable ingredient is so effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness, and uneven texture – dead cells are eliminated to reveal smoother, brighter, younger looking skin.
