What is it?

Elastin is a protein which is found in the skin and tissue of the body. It helps many tissues in the body to resume their shape after stretching or contracting, so skin will return to its original position when it is poked or pinched.

As we age, elastin slowly depletes, resulting in wrinkled or stretched out skin. Some women develop a “pregnancy pouch” after giving birth as this is a result of inadequate elastin, and the overstretching of the skin which covers the abdomen during pregnancy.

Why is Elastin important to my skin?

Elastin (along with collagen), makes up the structure of your skin that maintains both elasticity and firmness. As you age, your skin slows down the production of elastin; this starts to become apparent after the age of 25, with the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Other factors can speed up the depletion of Elastin and contribute to how our skin looks as we get older, these are: sun and tanning bed exposure, poor hydration, smoking, lack of sleep, and heredity condition.

Using products which contain elastin molecules is important, as it will help to boost the elastin in your skin. It does this by stimulating the fibroblast cells in the skin to increase their production as they are the cells which produce elastin.  To help the elastin molecules penetrate through the dermis and epidermis (which is where the fibroblast cells live) they need to be mixed with natural ingredients to help the penetration. Vitamin A and Squalane are perfect for this. The skin needs to be hydrated as this will keep the goodness locked in. Products containing repairing and nourishing ingredients such as Vitamins E & D are very effective as is Aloe Vera.
