Green Tea

by Kati Vardon

Blueberry Green Tea Smoothie

This smoothie contains both blueberries and matcha green tea powder, known for their antioxidant properties.

Sweetness comes from the frozen banana and creaminess from yoghurt and coconut milk. By using frozen fruit, your smoothie is deliciously cool, without the need for ice.

The recipe is simplicity itself. Pop everything in a blender and whizz it together until smooth. Drink it straight away, whilst nice and cool.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help to defend the body against the effects of free radicals from pollution, UV rays and chemicals that can lead to cell and DNA damage.

Green tea is popular, not only as a refreshing beverage, but also as a skincare ingredient.

Green tea and matcha are both derived from the tea plant ‘Camellia Sinensis’ which is native to Asia. Green tea is often found in a tea bag or loose leaves, whilst matcha is a powder made from grinding the dried leaves. The powder is highly concentrated, so a relatively smaller quantity is needed and you consume the entire leaf.

Matcha has 10 times the nutritional value of regular green tea and up to 137 times the amount of antioxidants. This is far higher than any other ‘superfood’. Although the powder can be used to make a regular cup of tea, it is also ideal to add to a homemade juice or smoothie.

Blueberries have been established as a superfood for many years. They are rich in polyphenols – micronutrients with antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that regular consumption of uncooked blueberries can have a positive effect on diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

Green Tea in Skin care

Not only is green tea good for the body when consumed, but it is also an excellent ingredient within skin care. Green tea extracts, with powerful antioxidants, have an anti-ageing effect when ingested or applied topically. They also help to reduce redness, irritation and swelling. It is also anti-bacterial, so useful when fighting the growth of bacteria that leads to acne.

The polyphenols in green tea soothe skin and can improve the appearance of sun-damage.

Along with other natural ingredients, green tea extract is found in a number of Pevonia products:
