Diatomite- Ingredient of the Month

Diatomite- Ingredient of the Month

What is it?

Diatomaceous earth, also known as diatomite, is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock, which can be easily crumbled into a fine white powder. Diatomaceous earth is made up of fossilised remains of diatoms, these were a type of tiny, aquatic hard-shelled algae. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica and over a long period of time, the diatoms accumulated in the sediment of rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans.

How can Diatomaceous Earth help my skin?

Diatomaceous Earth is an unusual ingredient, but one which really benefits the skin. It is made up of 89% silica, which is highly-important for the body. Silica is a trace element found in our body and the amount of it is much higher than any other mineral, such as iron or magnesium. It is because of this, it's crucial that we derive enough silica to help with numerous bodily functions and to aid in mineral absorption.

As we know, Collagen is extremely important for healthy skin. It gives the skin firmness and tone, rejuvenating the skin from the roots, and will help to reduce wrinkles and combat the symptoms of ageing, by increasing elastin formation which thickens, protects and heals skin cells. The thickening effect helps to retain moisture, increasing skin circulation and plumps up the skin surface.

Collagen also provides structure for blood vessels, especially the tiny blood vessels under the skin, which carries oxygen and nutrients that keeps the skin healthy.

More importantly, Collagen is mostly made up of silica.

When we are deficient in silica, our collagen breaks down more quickly, which makes the skin look dull, dehydrated and prone to signs of ageing.

Using ingredients such as Diatomaceous Earth which is high in silica, can restore and repair the collagen in our body. Silica also helps with skin concerns such as eczema, and acne.

Diatomaceous Earth’s texture is very fine and this makes it ideal as a gentle facial exfoliant and mask. Apart from its main component, silica, DE also contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium and phosphorous. Minerals can be absorbed through the skin, so this is a useful way to complement a mineral-rich diet.
