Camphor - Ingredient of the Month

Camphor - Ingredient of the Month

What is it?

Camphor is a substance derived from the wood of the Camphor Laurel, which is a large evergreen tree found in Asia, particularly in Borneo, Sumatra and Taiwan. It is also found in other trees in the laurel family, dried rosemary leaves and the mint family. Used for medicinal purposes, in religious ceremonies and as an ingredient in cooking (mainly in India), use of the oil dates back to the Middle East around 600 AD, and it was revered as sacred in ancient Greece and Egypt.

How can Camphor help my skin?

Camphor has multiple health and beauty benefits, and is especially effective when used on the skin. It has been used for many decades to treat hair and skin problems and, is a popular ingredient in Ayurveda beauty treatments. It is also used to treat acne and pimples as it has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and disinfectant properties and will help to lighten and lessen the appearance of the dark scars left on the skin from these conditions.

Acne Fighter

For acne sufferers, Camphor will bring relief to the red epithelial tissue and help to reduce the redness caused. It also has a slight numbing or analgesic effect on the skin, calming the painful irritation of a pustule or the burning/itching sensation from sunburn or a lesion.

Anti-inflammatory

Camphor is an essential ingredient of products that specialise in treating backaches and muscle and joint pains caused by arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. When rubbed directly on the skin as a gel or cream; users will feel a cooling sensation that adds to the feeling of pain relief. As Camphor is a detoxifier and a stimulant for the circulatory system, it will excite the blood circulation, which in turn, will help bring relief to rheumatic diseases, arthritis, and gout.

Anti-oxidant Rich

Anti-oxidants are found in Camphor and they help in lessening the entire process of oxidation which can lead to the creation of free-radicals. Free-radicals are chemicals which disrupt tissues as well as cells within our body.

General Benefits of Camphor

  • Relieves dry skin and itchy skin conditions
  • Calm forms of dermatitis
  • Soothes acne lesions
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Rich in antioxidants
  • A natural Anaesthetic
  • A natural Anti-inflammatory

Decongestant

The strong aroma of Camphor is a powerful decongestant which helps to relieve congestion of the bronchi, larynx, pharynx, nasal tracts and lungs, and, can be found in many decongestant balms and cold rubs. People suffering from frequent coughing should also use camphor. It is also known as a nervous pacifier, which means it will numb the sensory nerves, helping to reduce the severity of nervous disorders and conditions such as nervousness and chronic anxiety.

Cooling

While giving a cooling sensation to the body, Camphor also relaxes the mind, bringing a feeling of peace and freshness to the individual. It can be mixed with bathing water to enhance the feeling of coolness in hot weather or to help hot irritated skin.
