Calendula - Ingredient of the Month
What is it?
Calendula is also known as a pot marigold, an herbaceous plant which is part of the daisy family. Native to Asia, Western Europe and the Mediterranean, the meaning of Calendula is ‘little calendar’ or ‘little clock’. The Romans and the Greeks would use calendula in important ceremonies and would often wear crowns or garlands made from the flowers.
How can Calendula help my skin?
Excellent at soothing and hydrating dry and chapped skin, Calendula has powerful moisturising properties due to it containing natural Linoleic Acid. It acts as an emollient, adding moisture to the driest of areas and will nourish the skin and boost its health due to the high content of carotenoids, also found in Calendula.
Calendula contains antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it useful for protecting and soothing cuts, wounds and for healing piercings. The immunostimulant properties of Calendula, also make it highly-effective at treating slow-healing wounds in people who have a weakened immune system. This is because Calendula increases the blood flow to the affected area.
A fantastic anti-ageing property, Calendula stimulates the production of collagen and its proteins, especially around areas which have had a trauma, such as a cut. The healing process will be much quicker, encouraging new skin growth.
The flavonoids and saponins found in Calendula help to encourage skin healing and repair, but will significantly reduce inflammation, working well on sprained muscles and bruises. It will also help to calm red, sore areas on the skin or areas which have had a recent breakout due to its high Vitamin E content. Not only this, Calendula helps to clear up fungal conditions such as Athlete's foot.
Dry irritated skin concerns such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, will be soothed and hydrated by applying Calendula topically. Helping to penetrate the skin and bring balance and moisture back to areas which need are flaky, sore and need serious attention.
