Oily Skin - The Basic Facts
Oily skin is shiny, can be thick and dull looking. Often a chronically oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes. It is prone to blackheads. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil oozes on to
the surface of the skin and gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged to accommodate the excess oil and the skin can have a coarse look.
Many people have skin that is oily only in certain areas and dry or normal in others, a condition known as combination skin. Most people will also suffer from spots and oily skin at some time during their teenage and early adult years. This can be a real drain on confidence levels, particularly for
those who develop acne. Because of hormonal activity during adolescence, oily skin is common in teenagers, but it can occur at any age. The flow of sebum or oil increases during adolescence and starts decreasing with age.
Skin tends to become dryer as you get older. Pregnancy and menopause, hormonal imbalances can also upset the oil balance and increase the activity of sebaceous glands.
The great advantage of oily skin is that it ages at a slower rate than other skin types Heredity factors as well as hormones play the key role in whether or not you have oily skin. It is important to consistently keep the skin clean using good quality products that will effectively cleanse
the skin incorporating specific ingredients to help control sebaceous activity. People who suffer with oily tendencies tend to clean their face with astringent pads.
Oily skin needs special cleansing and care to prevent the pores from being clogged. It is important not to use harsh products that strip your skin of oil and encourage flakiness. They can cause a reaction known as reactive seborrhoea, where the oil glands work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils.
People with oily skin tend to want to strip it of all its natural oils and buy products which often contain a high percentage of alcohol that leave the skin feeling taut and dehydrated, but these products should be avoided as they will worsen the condition, causing the upper layers of the skin to shrink.
This restricts oil flow through the pores leading to blockages and breakouts. The brain cannot differentiate between dryness (lack of oil) and dehydration (lack of water). By dehydrating the skin’s surface the brain will send chemical signals to the sebaceous gland to produce more oil as it thinks it is dry. This is turn causes a secondary problem. The skin is now dehydrated therefore tight and shrivelled, thus making the flow of sebum into the skin restricted resulting in a congested skin prone to breakouts. Without correct hygiene and selecting appropriate homecare the condition can worsen.
An oily skin should always have protection using a care cream. Moisturiser is often the wrong terminology used, especially when speaking to a person with oily skin, as ‘moisturise’ is the last thing they want to hear. Pevonia recommends the Mattifying Oily Skin Cream, which is designed as a light,
greaseless textured cream that normalises the skin by controlling the sebaceous glands secretions. It also contains a UV protection to provide a barrier against environmental damage and therefore reduces blockages within the pores.
Causes of Oily Skin:
- Heredity
- Hormone levels
- Pregnancy
- Birth control pills
- Diet
- Cosmetics
- Humidity
- Hot weather
Pevonia Botanica designed The Ultimate Deep Cleanse treatment for people with oily congested skin types, whose skin suffers from a build-up of oil impurities that leave behind blackheads and milia. These blockages prevent the skin from absorbing active ingredients to its full capacity thus hindering results achieved, not only in professional facials but also in homecare regimes. When the skin is clogged it continues to produce oil which, when combined with the impurities collected, causes the base of the follicle to swell and release bacteria (anti-bodies), thus as the infection rises up through the layers of the skin, it accumulates into a spot (pustule). Excess product sits on the surface of the skin leaving a greasy texture and an unclean feeling.
Pevonia Botanica tailored this facial to be prescribed as a course, initially one treatment per week for six weeks, complemented with a maintenance home care plan. This set course is essential to effectively rid the toxic accumulation and re-educate the skin to become firmer, stronger and more
receptive to treatment.
To deeply cleanse and soften the congestion of the skin, a combination of an Enzyme exfoliant with Pineapple and Papaya enzymes, Glycolic Acid, Sodium Bicarbonate and Lemon Extract work in unison to make way for easier and comfortable extraction.
Once the congestion has been eliminated, the skin can be treated with a Galvanic process, which is a direct current that relaxes the pores and weakens the skin barrier. This process enables deeper penetration of active ingredients to the birth of the cell, thus reconditioning the skin’s bad habits as it restores the tightness of the pores and strengthens the skin.
Oily skin demands products that control over production of sebum and regulate the skin’s pH. Pevonia’s oily skin line combines the most effective natural extracts, such as Geranium Oil, Hops, Burdock and Lactic Acid, in light-textured, non-greasy formulations to normalise the skin by controlling sebaceous glands secretions. Skin resurfaces refined, hydrated and shine-free.
To balance an oily skin do not use products containing alcohol, as this will naturally strip the oil and cause dehydration. Long term effects can cause the skin to over-produce oil in order to compensate for the loss.
